Inside the Podcast: Podshop's 2024 Wrapped

What a year it’s been for Podshop! We didn’t just open one shiny new podcast studio—we opened two!

Since January, we’ve welcomed hundreds of wonderful people through our doors—from Lionesses and politicians to reality TV stars and more. We’ve had a front-row seat as amazing shows have come to life and grown, and it’s been a real honour to be part of the journey.

As 2024 winds down, we thought it’d be fun to pull back the curtain and show you what goes into making these incredible podcasts. So, today, we’re handing the mic over to the talented, hardworking folks behind the scenes.

Tom Sharman

Podcast: Secret Leaders with Dan Murray and Chris Donnolly

What was a conversation or moment from this year that changed your perspective or left a lasting impact on you?

"One episode of Secret Leaders that stands out is an episode with the former chancellor of the exchequer and Tory minister Nadhim Zahawi at Podshop back in September.

Going into it, I can’t say I was a fan of Nadhim having seen him on my TV screen. But speaking over emails, a research call and then on the day of recording, I felt I got a real sense of who the real Nadhim is and where his values lie.

I think the team did a great job of showing a more real side to Nadhim and his way of thinking than any mainstream media I’ve watched him over the years. That felt like a real stepping-stone episode."

What do you enjoy most about working in podcasting?

"My background is largely in YouTube production, and this is my first role working on a podcast, which is also the case for much of the team. We see this as a strategic decision to transition to a video-first show.

The thing I most enjoy is the people; it selfishly allows me to surround myself with the co-founders and hosts of the show, Dan Murray-Serter and Chris Donnelly, both incredible entrepreneurs from whom I learn daily, a killer team that can do things far better than I can, our partners, agencies, distributors, our talent booker Katie—so many people with such varied roles behind the scenes.

And then, of course, the guests. Who wouldn’t want the opportunity to get to know and speak with some of the world’s smartest business minds who have the best life experiences? I feel very lucky."

“I felt I got a real sense of who the real Nadhim is, where his values lie.”

Podcast: Homing In from The Modern House

What was a conversation or moment from this year that changed your perspective or left a lasting impact on you?

"This season of Homing In, Nigel Slater and Matt Gibberd had a really powerful conversation about anxiety attacks. Hearing two men speak so openly about their mental health was both refreshing and comforting in equal measure. It’s something a lot of us can relate to, and it is a perspective we don’t hear often enough. I really think it’s worth a listen for anyone."

What do you enjoy most about working in podcasting?

"What I love most about working on podcasts is the opportunity to be part of meaningful conversations. It’s all about creating space for people to share their stories and helping listeners feel heard and understood."

What was a conversation or moment from this year that changed your perspective or left a lasting impact on you?

"One of the most memorable moments this year was our episode with Ben Hurst, the Director of Facilitation and Training at Beyond Equality, who works to engage men and boys in conversations about gender equality. Ben and Jayda talked about masculinity in such an honest, thought-provoking way, especially surrounding the challenges Black men and boys face in being more emotional and how it can feel unsafe for them due to the realities they’ve experienced and how society treats male vulnerability.

As a therapist outside of producing podcasts, this really stuck with me. Therapy often focuses on encouraging emotions and vulnerability, but Ben’s perspective reminded me how important it is to make sure clients—especially Black men—feel safe and understood first. Any step toward openness has to happen at their own pace. That conversation with Ben has really influenced how I approach my work, both as a therapist and a producer."

What do you enjoy most about working in podcasting?

"There are so many roles involved in producing podcasts, but my favourite part is all about the guests. I love exploring themes and finding guests who I know will bring fresh perspectives to an episode. Then, there’s the fun of crafting questions for Jayda to ask that really bring the episode to life. I’m a big thinker and philosopher at heart (that was my first degree!), so I love the chance to really dive deep into the topics when writing.

But the absolute best part is during the recordings, listening to Jayda’s conversations with these amazing and unique people. I love hearing all of their stories and experiences of the world! So, really, what I love most about working in podcasts is how much it expands my understanding of others, the world, and even myself through reflecting on each episode."

    Podcast: Join The Docs

What was a conversation or moment from this year that changed your perspective or left a lasting impact on you?

"My highlight of the year was taking Join the Docs in front of a live audience at Cheerful Earful. Podcasting is all about the connection between hosts and their audience, but it’s rare to see that connection play out in real time. Watching listeners react to the show as it happened was so special—a tangible reminder of why we do what we do."

What do you enjoy most about working in podcasting?

"For me, it’s seeing people with niche passions take center stage. In other media, commissioners often dismiss niche ideas, saying there’s no audience demand for them, so we end up with the same ideas recycled over and over. Podcasts have totally changed that.

Say you love Sunday Roasts (I certainly do!) there’s a podcast called Emer & Esther’s Sunday Roast where two women travel around Ireland trying out different roasts. It just goes to show there’s no topic too niche if you make it interesting and fun. Helping people get their voices heard is what we’re all about at Podshop, and I’m proud to be part of that mission."
